FLORENCE ELIZABETH BREWER, 99, passed away on Monday, August 3, 2015 at Good Samaritan Society-Shakamak Retirement Community.

Florence (known to many as Flossie) was born on December 30, 1915 in West Frankfurt, Illinois. She moved to Jasonville with her family in 1931 and graduated from Jasonville High School in 1933. She met John C. Brewer at the Rexall drugstore in 1937.  They married on February 22, 1940 and were married for sixty-six years until the time of John’s death in 2006.  They had two sons, Doug and Barry.

Florence was an active member of the Lawton Street Christian Church and a long-standing member of Tri Kappa Sorority, having joined in 1938.  She spoke frequently of her Tri Kappa sisters and cherished the time she spent with them.  Florence lived the tenets of both of these organizations.  She was kind, caring, compassionate, and always put others’ needs before her own.  Over the years she worked at the utility office, Ford garage and People’s Trust Bank, always making friends along the way.  She took care of everyone she met, which usually involved food, and if you were lucky, one of her famous cherry pies.

Florence is preceded in death by her parents Ivor and Hazel (Funkhouser) Johns, husband John C. Brewer, son Barry A. Brewer, brother Harold Johns and granddaughter Laurie Marie Brewer. She is survived by her son Douglas L. Brewer  and his wife Judy (Columbus, OH), daughter in-law Janice Brewer (Cocoa Beach, FL), grandchildren Ryan Brewer (Cocoa Beach, FL), Carrie Dinger (Orlando, FL), Brittany Nalawadi (Bufflao, NY), Erin Humbaugh (New York, NY), and her eleven great grandchildren.

Florence’s family would like to thank her many friends in Jasonville.  Florence was able to live a healthy, happy, and long life because of all of the help and support she received from the community.  She repeatedly said, “People need friends.  Why just look at me.  Where would I be without my friends?”  She felt truly blessed to be able to share her life with such wonderful people.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Florence Brewer was held on Friday August 21st, 11:00 AM at the Lawton Street Christian Church (315 S. Lawton St. Jasonville, IN 47438). Family welcomed friends at the church an hour before the service from 10:00 to 11:00.  A lunch followed the service in the fellowship hall. Florence was buried at Lebanon Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were handled by Cox Funeral Home, Jasonville, IN.

In lieu of flowers, donations were made to the Lawton Street Christian Church and the Jasonville Public Library.
