ELDEN CREASY “TIP” TIPTON, 91, of Jasonville died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving wife of 65 years, Ines, daughter, Linda and son, Steve at 3:40 p.m. Tuesday, January 26, 2010. He was born November 25, 1918 in Stokesdale, NC during the great flu pandemic to Bernard Tipton and Cornelia (Creasy) Tipton.

He married his wife of 65 years Ines (nee Boccard) of Valparaiso, Chile on July 20, 1945 at the California Almeda Naval Air Station. Survivors include his wife, Ines Tipton of Jasonville; daughters, Linda Tipton of Jasonville and Bonnie Tipton of Houston, TX; sons, JohnTipton of Jacksonville, FL, Joseph Tipton of Washington, DC and currently serving in Afghanistan, Stephen Tipton of Jasonville and William “Bill” Tipton of Loveland, OH; brothers, Bernard Tipton of Virginia and Tom Tipton of Illinois; 12 grandchilldren; six great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. he was preceded in death by his loving parents; brother, Don Tipton; sisters, Virginia Fernald and Rubylee Ward.

Senator Tipton grew up in Hymera and graduated from Indiana State University with a B.S. degree in Political Science and lettered on the Sycamore’s Varsity Football teams in 1938-40. Just before WWII he joined the U.S. Navy’s pilot training program nearly 3 months prior to the December 7th, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. After retiring from the Navy as Commander in 1962, he began his second and third careers as a statesman and public school teacher in the Shakamak School System where he was famous for his A++. During his 26 years in government including two terms in the Indiana State Senate, he was invited to the White House on three separate occasions to meet with Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Jimmy Carter. He and Ines were long time members of the Shakamak Community Church.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Cox Funeral Home, 218 South Meridian Street, Jasonville, IN. Visitation was 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and Noon until service time on Saturday at the Shakamak Community Church. Funeral Services were 2 p.m. Saturday, January 30, 2010 at the church with Pastor Chris McKinney officiating. Military Rites were conducted. In keeping with Elden’s wishes cremation was scheduled.

Contributions were made to the Salvation Army in memory of Elden.
