FRED MELVIN WALTERS, 95, of Jasonville, IN passed away at 3:25 p.m. Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at his home in Jasonville.

He was born October 19, 1924 in Sullivan County, IN to Charles Lee Walters and  Mary Jane Debra (Clough) Walters.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Vera Walters of Jasonville, IN whom he married on February 6, 1948; children, Michael L.Walters (Janis) of Jasonville, IN, Lori A. Miller (Jeff) of Jasonville, IN, daughter in-law, Susan Walters of Jasonville, IN; grandchildren, Travis Walters (Nicole), Jamie Cornelius, Kent Walters (Patti), Aaron Walters (Jaclyn) and Elise Miller; great-grandchildren, Jake Walters, Hannah Walters, Luke Cornelius,  Mel Cornelius, Charli Walters, Mattox Walters, Jimmy Walters and Braxton Walters; siblings, Charles A. Walters of Murphreesboro, TN and Norma Anderson of Mt.Carmel, IL: several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Son, Robert J. Walters: granddaughter, Ashley Jo Walters: Siblings, James Welsh, George Welsh, Hazel Harper, Jeanie Welsh, Harold Walters, Ruth Ballard and infant Leslie Welsh.

Melvin was a graduate of Union High School Class of 1943; he was a member of the UMWA and retired from Amax Coal Company after 42 years of service. Melvin was an avid Chicago Cubs Fan and enjoyed all types of sports, including the Hoosiers and Bears. He helped start the Dugger Little League Baseball program. He coon hunted, fished and generally loved being outdoors. Melvin was a WWII Navy Veteran having served aboard the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Essex, he was a Purple Heart recipient and a member of the Dugger American Legion #224. Melvin enjoyed having fun and was known as a big prankster with family and friends. He attended and was a member of Dugger First Baptist Church.

Arrangements are entrusted to Michael W. Cox, Cox Funeral Home; 218 South Meridian Street; Jasonville, Indiana. Visitation is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the Funeral Home. Funeral Services are 2 p.m. Monday; November 4, 2019 with Pastor John Sandiford officiating.

Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Linton, IN with Military Graveside Rites.
