JAMES L. “JIM” SMITH, 80, of Coalmont, IN passed away at 6:31 A.M. Thursday, February 9, 2023 in Shakamak Good Samaritan Nursing Home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born January 9, 1943 in Lafayette, IN to Lewis Smith and Mildred Smith (Holt).

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Shirley (Crist) Smith of Coalmont, IN who he married in 1964;          children, Rebecca Hayes (Scott), David Smith (Nila) of Jasonville, IN; grandchildren, Emily Steward, Evan Smith (Mandy), Ethan Smith, Grace Cross (Kyle), Olivia Hayes (Noah Walton), Emme Smith;                great-grandchildren, Eli, Adalyn, Hank, Aven, Charlotte, Clara; siblings, Audrey Lett (Jerry), Beverly Benham (Terry), Janice Ingram (Malcolm), Tony Smith; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Larry Smith.

Jim graduated from Worthington High School Class of 1961. He then joined the United States Navy. He married Shirley Crist before moving to California where he served at San Diego Naval Base. After his enlistment ended they moved back to Lewis, Indiana to be close to their families. They planted their roots in Coalmont, and Jim went on to work for GTE until he retired. After retirement, Jim spent his time helping to take care of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, watching old western movies and spending time with his family. Jim never met a stranger and enjoyed talking to everyone. He was genuinely interested in their life stories. He loved playing games, completing word puzzles and had an incredible memory for dates and birthdays. He was loved and will be missed by his family and friends. Jim was a member of Friendly Grove Baptist Church.

Arrangements are entrusted to Michael W. Cox, Cox Funeral Home; 218 South Meridian Street; Jasonville, Indiana. Visitation is scheduled from 1:30 to 4 P.M. Sunday, February 12, 2023 at Friendly Grove Baptist Church, 10520 S. County Road 550 W., Lewis, IN. Services are immediately following at 4 P.M. with his son Pastor David Smith officiating.

Interment will be at Friendly Grove Cemetery in Lewis, IN with Military Graveside Rites.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in memory of Jim to the Lewis Township Fire Department and the Activities Fund at Shakamak Good Samaritan Nursing Home. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
