Joy Gay Brown, 75, of Hymera, Indiana, passed away peacefully at 5:35 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Joy was born on August 21, 1950, in Terre Haute, Indiana, to Denver Crist and Mannon (Taylor) Crist. Joy graduated from North Central High School. She married her high school sweetheart, John W. Brown, on November 26, 1966, beginning a marriage filled with devotion, laughter, and family memories that spanned nearly 60 years. She was a lifelong member of Hymera First Baptist Church.

Above all else, Joy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She dedicated many years to being a stay-at-home mom, raising her three daughters and creating a home centered on love, family gatherings, and celebration. Later, she began working for the United States Post Office, where her strong work ethic and caring personality eventually led her to become Postmaster in Jasonville, Indiana, a position she proudly held until retirement.

Joy never met a stranger. She kept “Thank You For Your Service” challenge coins on hand to give to veterans she may encounter. The coin was to show her appreciation of their service to our country. She found joy in bringing people together and had a special talent for making birthdays, holidays, and ordinary days feel memorable. She was known for organizing parties and celebrating family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and patrons alike.

After retirement, she continued serving her community tending bar at the Hymera American Legion Post 298, where she was also a proud Auxiliary member. She took special pride in decorating and maintaining the memorial outside the Hymera American Legion honoring those who served. The Legion was more than a place to her—it was family and community.

Joy enjoyed taking cruises and visiting family throughout her life. She and John especially enjoyed driving to casinos together, making many trips and memories over the years. Some of Joy’s happiest moments were spent laughing with her sisters, watching her granddaughter’s softball games, going to many collegiate cross country meets, shopping—especially for shoes—and simply being surrounded by the people she loved most.

Survivors include her husband of nearly 60 years, John W. Brown of Hymera; daughters, Linda Doty (Chad) of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Rebecca Martlage (Kevin) of St. Joseph, Illinois, and Trisha Stockdell (Dean) of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Tyler Doty (Alacia), Megan Vertelney (Ben), Emma Alkonis (Matthew), Sophia Martlage, and Kelsey Martlage; great-grandchildren, Mabel Doty, Montgomery Doty, and Beauden Alkonis; and sister, Grace Miller of Coalmont, Indiana; along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Barbara Hudson.

Her legacy is one of love, laughter, hospitality, faith, patriotism, and unwavering dedication to family and community. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Michael W. Cox, Cox Funeral Home; 218 South Meridian Street; Jasonville, Indiana. The family wishes to thank everyone for their love, prayers, and support during this difficult time. In accordance with their wishes, private arrangements have been made. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sullivan County Honor Guard, 31 S State Street, Sullivan, Indiana, 47882.
