JOHN A. MURPHY, 73, of Jasonville, Indiana passed away at 7:45 p.m. Monday, March 6, 2017 in Greene County General Hospital, Linton, IN.  

He was born December 7, 1943 in New Hampshire to John F. Murphy and Mary Agnes (Roach) Murphy.

Survivors include his children, Melissa & husband, Anthony Petros of Elmhurst, IL, Brendan Murphy & partner, Maureen Kline of Zionsville, IN, Kieran Murphy & wife, Janile Hill of Chicago, IL, Kathleen Murphy of Indianapolis, IN, Gina & husband, Joe Hemersbach of Cutler, IN; significant other, Rita Sanders of Jasonville, IN; grandchildren, Emma Murphy, Claire Murphy, Amelia Murphy; Eileen Petros, James Petros, Corey Grace, John Grace, Jerome Hemersbach, Meagan Grace, Addison Marie Sanders; siblings and spouses, Mary Agnes & Jerald Scharfenberg of Elmhurst, IL, Dennis Murphy & Teresa Moore of Lafayette, IN, Jo Pat & Tom Lekens of Greenfield, IN, Kevin & Jane Murphy of Indianapolis, IN, Gerry & Lisa Murphy of Carmel, IN; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

John was a Graduate of St. Meinrad High School. He was a Mechanical Engineer working for General Motors in their research and development department. He was instrumental for starting a program in Cheboygan, MI call DART which was a substance abuse rescue team. John was extremely gifted as he worked in all his varied occupations. He served as a Councilman in Cheboygan, MI, was a Researcher/Author and worked with the Salvation Army substance abuse program. John also worked as a Legal Consultant, spending many hours researching law books to help prisoners reduce their jail time. He loved boating, tinkering in the garage. He built and sponsored a car to race in road rallies. He was selected Volunteer of the Year for his work by the National Council on Alcoholism/Michigan Division. John served as Cantor of St. Williams Church in Guntersville.

Arrangements were entrusted to Michael W. Cox, Cox Funeral Home; 218 South Meridian Street; Jasonville, IN; coxfuneralhomejasonville.com. Cremation was chosen and A Gathering of Friends was scheduled 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday with Memorial Services immediately following at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 18, 2017 at the Cox Funeral Home with Father Ken Herr officiating.
