MARY JUANITA ROWE, of Jasonville, Indiana born January 23, 1915, passed into her heavenly home on March 12, 2013, at age 98, while staying with sisters near Los Angeles.  Juanita was married to Dutch Rowe for 69 years, Dutch having died on May 22, 2011, at age 96. Juanita is survived by her son, John, and daughter-in-law, Debi; three grandchildren, Cortney Givens (and husband Greg), Lucas Rowe, and Jess Rowe; two great-grandchildren, Griffith and Moses Givens; three sisters, Margaret Moon, Wilma Corbin and Annette Haskett; nieces and nephews; many special friends, including Wendell and Marilyn Cooprider and family.

Juanita was the daughter of Charles R. and Mary Ellen Short and was one of 11 children: Arthur, Norman, Juanita, Ruth, Florence, Margaret, Alice, Betty, Wilma, Robert, and Ann.

Juanita began teaching at age 17, earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in education, and taught for more than 30 years. She also owned The Nifty Shop in Jasonville. Her schools included one-room buildings and ended with her retirement from Shakamak.  She taught elementary students during most of her career and, to the end, could remember her students by description if not by name. Juanita was involved in sorority and community affairs, and was an avid bridge player, who enjoyed challenges, but much more enjoyed the relationships that those associations offered.

She was a devout Christian and was looking forward to being with the Lord at the end of her life here. She encouraged others, looked upon each person as a gift, and helped her family and students strive to display their best. Many of us tested her, but she persevered, and blessed us.

Arrangements were entrusted to Michael W. Cox, Cox Funeral Home; 218 South Meridian Street; Jasonville, Indiana with Visitation scheduled from 4 – 8 p.m. Friday, March 22, 2013 and Noon – 2 p.m. Saturday at the Funeral Home. Funeral Services were 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013 at the Cox Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Miller officiating.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances were made to the Greene County Foundation for the Wilburn and Juanita Rowe Fund.
