VIVIAN L. STEVENSON, 97, of Wilfred, IN died at home on Thursday 12 September 2024 at 2 pm. She would not have been sad to miss Thursday night NFL football. She would have been disappointed to miss her great-grandson Brantley’s junior high football game though. She hadn’t been able to attend games recently so shaking off this mortal shell was her only way to get there. Vivian led a long, happy, and rewarding life. She was active and independent until very recently. She had seen all the sights she wanted to, done all the things and had often remarked she wasn’t sure why she was still here. She lit up when spending time with her youngest great-grandchild Lilybelle, named for Vivian’s grandmother, but wasn’t able to chase after the imp any more. Vivian’s passing is not one to mourn, but merely our sign of reunions with those she has loved and missed beginning. Vivian’s daughter Glenda maintained a near constant vigil over her in her final days. Her family would have loved for her to stay, but we’er sure she was ready to go.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Charles W. “Chuck” Stevenson and both of her sons Gary (Sheree) and Jerry Stevenson. Vivian is survived by her daughter Glenda (Tom) Dean of Hymera, IN, seven grandchildren, and twenty great-grandchildren. As well as her brother Charles McDaniel, brother-in-law, Warren (June) Stevenson and sister-in-law, Wilma Cochran. Vivian was born outside Hymera, IN on 03 March 1927 and graduated from Hymera High School. Vivian and Chuck were married on 25 January 1947 and moved to South Bend, IN following work in the industries of the time, and lived there for much of their adult life. It was there they welcomed and raised their children, and met lifelong friends. They retired back to Sullivan County in 1989 to be close to their parents and family. They were a constant presence in the lives of their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Vivian enjoyed going to the State Parks to walk around, watching the humming birds at her feeders, going to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s sporting events, and yacking at the kitchen table. We’ll miss it all.
Arrangements are entrusted to Michael W. Cox, Cox Funeral Home; 218 South Meridian Street; Jasonville, Indiana. Visitation is scheduled from 2 P.M. to 4 P.M. Friday September 20, 2024 at the Funeral Home. Services are immediately following at 4 P.M. with Pastor David Smith officiating.
Interment will be at Friendly Grove Cemetery in Lewis, IN.
